when you check the oil level is the bike on it's center stand?

I have a 97 Max with about 8,500 miles on it. I bought the bike in Feb.
with 7,400 miles or so on it. I did an oil change and since then, I've had
what I would describe as a "static" oil leak i.e. the engine leaks upon
shut down for a few minutes and then stops. The drips are on the left side
from the side stand back about 10 or 12 inches. I have checked the case
covers on the left side and all the screws appear tight. The bike leaks
whether its on the side stand or center stand.
The oil level has not decreased by an appreciable amount. I may have
overserviced the system and the leak is from a breather or other type of
overflow. When I changed the oil and filter, I refilled the case with
about 3.7 quarts of Mobil1 15W50. I would've expected to put about 4 or
more quarts in when changing the oil and filter. The oil level was up to
the top of the sight gage.
The oil level now (about 750 miles or so after the oil change) is at the
mid-way point of the sight gage.
If the leak was due to overservicing, I would have expected it to stop by
now. Does the VMax have a propensity for leaks such as this? Is there
anything I should be particularly alert for so that I can fix this myself?
I'm planning to take it to the shop this week.
