There's been quite a bit of helpful advice on this subject. Because of
rain yesterday, I didn't get a chance to get down on the ground and look
for the possible source of my oil leak. I may be able to do so today.

I purchased the bike in February, and did NOT notice any leak before I
changed the oil. I changed the oil and filter per the shop manual with one
exception: I drained the oil from a cold bike. I didn't run the engine up
to operating temperature first. I don't think this is relevant to the
cause of the leak, but it may explain why it took less than 4 quarts to
refill the crankcase.

I am very suspicious of the areas pointed out in several responses: the
O-ring at the shifter shaft, the shaft drive area, etc. I'll have a close
look today. One cause may have been starting the engine on a cold morning
and running the engine up before the oil warmed up. Perhaps it
overpressurized an O-ring seal.
