Mick,
You may have to clean things up a bit to find your leak, (actually see
where it is coming from). I would like to suggest a couple of things
to check if you have not already. I had a leak on another bike ...
that seemed temperature sensitive ... it would drip after running and
then stop. This particular leak was coming from the center of the oil
level switch ... It is similar to other sending unit type devices with
the works encased in a threaded metal shell and apparently not to well
in this instance. Also .. the middle gear cover .. which your shift
shaft passes through ... has one screw at the bottom, (the one closest
to the shift shaft), that is an oil drain. This "case cover" screw is
different than all the others because it has a copper crush washer
underneath it. This screw is a drain for the transmission area etc ...
If this was ever taken out and replaced without a new crush washer or
some RTV then even if it is torqued to spec it will drip. This screw
is so close to the shift shaft it will spread and it is very difficult
to see where the oil is actually coming from. A drip from this drain
screw would cause oil dampness in the area you described. Overfilling
would not cause "leaks" .. however it is entirely possible it would
percolate out via the crankcase vent that attaches to the bottom of
your airbox .... but then you would have mess and the source would be
more obvious.
