Tyler,
I took it pretty much the same way .. except ... if there is enough
fuel in the tank to "not" operate the switch .. it puts out 900 ohms
.. +/- 200 ohms. When the switch is "operated" it is shorted ... Thus
.. since the "black" lead is ground and the green lead goes to the
relay ... you will see 900 ohms +/- 200 ohms to ground with fuel ...
and a "ground" without fuel on the "green" lead to the relay. This
"green" lead also goes directly to the "fuel" lamp on the console.
Ground to the "relay" (really more than a relay in there) starts the
30 second timer that will kill the fixed battery feed to the relay ..
(R/W lead) .. and to regain operation the battery is fed into the
relay via the "reserve" switch on the R/G lead. As long as you have
one of "those" batteries and an output voltage from the "ignitor", (an
I'm running indication), on the "orange" lead .. the fuel pump will
receive a battery feed from the relay. Then of course the fuel pump
turns itself on and off using it's own built in "cut off" switch ..
(in the base of the fuel pump .. which opens or closes depending on
flow resistance). What do you think ?? Do you buy that ?? Look at the
mock up schematic on page 7-53 ...

Subject: Re: (Vmax) How to change the fuel sending unit
Dam, I wish this question had come up earlier. I just tossed out a bad
fuel level sensor and didn't think of opening it to see how it works,
my guess by looking at it, it worked by when it is immersed in gas the
resistance is near or at zero(closed) and when in air the resistance
is 200ohms,it looks like when the resistance falls to a predetermined
level it signals the fuel pump relay to turn on light and after 30
seconds to turn off pump. to turn pump back on either flick switch to
reserve or fuel bike, also relay will automatically turn pump off if
igniter box is turned off by the kill switch and you forget to turn
off the key(neat safety feature),if it didn't have this feature the
pump will continue to run if the switch is in the reserve position and
key is on. I hope this is correct just my opinion after looking at
schematic and reading troubleshooting section, Can anybody verify my
version of the way it works??
