I'm afraid I touched on this topic a few days ago, but I realize I was WAY
too vague.

I am considering buying a Vmax for the first time. My bike for the last 10
years was a 1985 Nighthawk 650, but, after her fair share of spills, she
gave up the ghost a few mo's ago in a crash, & now I'm ready for a new
(used) bike that GOES but I don't want a crotchrocket. After a few Vmax
test runs, I'm definitely infected, but my budget is limited

So here's what I'm considering: a 1990 Max w/ 42,000 miles for $3000. The
catches are these: There's quite a bit of cosmetic damage, esp. corrosion on
some of the aluminum. I think the bike has been down in a crash, though not
seriously all signs of a crash are quite old, indicating to me that the
bike has been riding just fine for quite some time. In addition, the
seller's reasons for getting rid of the bike are clear it's too big for
him & he's gotten a new on that fits him better.

My Questions:

1) How long (& FAR) do Vmaxes generally run. I know how the bike was
ridden & cared for has a lot to do w/ this, but, since I don't know these
variables, what's an average?

2) what sorts of repairs should I expect at this point in the bike's
career, & how costly are they? (Also, what costly repairs are likely in the
future?)

3) what should I be looking/listening for while assessing the bike (the
test drive damn-near dislocated my shoulders so I assume it's still in
pretty good health). There were no leaks in the garage, on the bike or
anything else obvious like that.

4) Are there any other things I should be worrying about? -- esp expensive
things? (I know a compression test & evaluation by a mechanic would be a
good idea, but as i live more than an hour away from the owner, none of this
would be easy to do.)

THANKS for your help
