I'd like to add my experience and query to the question about fuel reserve
switches.

My bike has behaved like this ever since new. My red light will come on, I
switch to reserve immediately but the bike will die very soon after. I stop
the bike, wait for a while, then switch on the ignition. I hear the fuel
pump fill the bowls then I can start again. I get a half a mile down the
road, and the same thing happens again.

I can hear the fuel pump so I know it's working. Can anyone tell me what's
happening to cause this?
