Kurt,
The number for Yamaha in Cypress, California is 714 761-7300 .....
actually I have a letter here from a previous escalation that says "If
your dealer has been unsuccessful in assisting you, and you wish to
speak to Yamaha directly, please call 714 761-7439."

You don't have to do anything in advance to talk to these people ...
however ... if you don't follow the process you will leave them in a
position to say something like ...... "uhhhhhh , we haven't heard
about that ... you should take it to a dealer" ...... The owner if
called will say ... "uhhhhh ... gee I haven't heard about that ... or
I checked with my mechanics and they said it was just a conversation
with the customer about common noises etc .. we told him to bring it
back if he thought he really had a problem" ..... and now the dealer
will have an attitude as you have pissed him/her off ....... by going
to Yamaha and complaining about their service. Also ... if you have to
do something about this in the future ... where it might require civil
action etc .. then you will not fare well if you haven't complied with
"your" obligations associated with a warranty service claim that are
clearly outlined in the rear of the owner's manual.

The "process" of course as stated in the rear of your owner's manual
is to take the bike to a dealer and ask for resolution. If you don't
like what the dealer says then you send the "owner" a letter stating
that you are not satisfied with the resolution of your problem, (now
the "clock" starts and there is a "record" ... you are no longer
dealing with somebody's personal opinions in the back room) ......
This should get it fixed because the "owner" now has a stick to beat
Yamaha with ... and has a valid documented customer complaint in his
hands ... The "time stamp" is a motivator ... for the dealer to either
resolve it themselves or escalate to Yamaha ...

IMHO ... any other course of action may bring results ..... but only
compliance will leave you in a position to seek relief at a later date
should things not go to your satisfaction.
