Amen to that. Propane torch (unless it's oxy-propane) won't put out enough
therms. Dry ice works even better than the freezer treatment for cold
tempering and shrinking. It takes the part down to minus 80. Liquid
nitrogen's even better, but harder to work with. I haven't done this with a
Max shaft, but you might find a container big enough (maybe a picnic cooler)
to fit the shaft with the flywheel out of the tank, fill the container with
ethanol and dry ice, wait for the dry ice to stop fizzing, and drop the
shaft into mix. This might be sufficient to remove the wheel without adding
any heat. The dry ice will cool the ethanol to 80 degrees below zero and
might shrink the shaft enough to remove without pain. It'll cost maybe $20
for the ethanol, though.

Don't use flame near the ethanol, obviously, unless you want to emulate
cherries jubilee or baked alaska. And use gloves....well insulated ones.
