It's just a ratio. If ten is the total intake, 1 is the area compressed.

in the cylinders when the ambient air pressure is 14.5 psi???
I've been wondering about this for some time... Even with different cam
overlaps & durations, the final (peak) compression should register as such
on a compression gauge, right? (or wrong?)
