Steve,
You should probably check out the articles at Terry Hayden's site ...
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Speedway/2476/index.html ...

He has done an airflow comparison involving stock/K&N filter
replacements ... removing the "Y" ... etc ... You should note that the
results reveal that the K&N is of no real benefit with the "Y" in
place ... As you start shimming it or drilling small holes in it you
may reap some benefit on the top end without giving too much on the
bottom but as you take more off .... your low end will start packing
and ultimately move to Florida .. as you reach the point where you
have completely removed the "Y" and trimmed the airbox to match the
K&N filter. Terry's site describes some minor shimming that can be
done that should be of benefit without requiring a major retune
effort.

The stage one kit is a nice kit to have because it gives you a lot of
stuff to play with .. adjustable needles, shims, light tension springs
and an assortment of jets. There is even a set of DJ150 PAJ2 jets in
the kit that will get you by with a complete "Y" removal .. If you do
more or start trimming then you may as well plan on upping you pilot
fuel jets to 42.5s and fine tune the low end with pilot air jets, (in
which case bigger will make you leaner). You don't need to do this if
you are going to run an open vboost all the time as you will initially
be too rich down there anyhow ... and may even need to lean things out
a little, (like a DJ190 or equiv in the PAJ2 position).

I would think that with just the "Y" off and the K&N that you would
have everything you need in the stage 1 kit, (for a normal vboost
configuration or one that opens after 4K I would put the 42.5s in
anyhow ..... but probably just the DJ150 in the PAJ2 position will
work fine for this limited configuration). As you continue to remove
intake restriction you will likely have to add main air jet correctors
and steeper needles. Patrick Ahearn did a nice write up on this for
his hybrid stage 7 kit which has been posted many times before.

IMHO as always ......
