Steve,
I have seen plenty of mods for opening the airbox to improve the immediate
flow character but none to improve airbox volume. I am working on one (along
with a rear frame section brace and a variable speed fan control) but it is
not finished.
I think that the inlets of the airbox are nearly adequate but the volume
doesn't give you much reserve. My concept is based on something I have
observed in high performance marine engines like those in waverunners. The
hull interior ultimately is the airbox. The tremendous volume helps with the
instant throttle response.
When you go from closed or partial to WOT or near-WOT you cause the air
pressure to drop sharply in the airbox. At a sustained throttle opening the
flow equalizes and the airbox pressure stabilizes.
In quick starts and constantly varied throttle positions a large volume
helps. The best case is wide open like a velocity stack but to help the
intake in those transitional moments large volume is the key.
Think of it like a pressure accumulator or vacuum resevoir except you are
trying to normalize the volumetric behavior of the airbox.
Now, having said that I am sure there will be an argument so I qualify my
statement by saying, "For flexibility in street riding..."

Subject: [Vmax] Air box mods
I'm thinking about getting a K&N air filter (oem replacement) for my 94
Vmax along with
some supertrapp slipons....
Question: what is the best mods for the stock air box ?
I've seen some people raise the "Y" to make the inlet
bigger
I've seen some people remove the "Y" and trim the top
cover to the
inside diameter of the air filter
some others have just drilled holes in the "Y"
If I install the K&N replacement filter (oem style) and do the air box
mod along with
super trapp slipons will a Stage 1 kit be all I need ?
Thanks, Steve Moore 94 Vmax
