I am in process of doing the same thing.  Be sure to use 12 volt fluorescent fixtures, available from RV shops as opposed to 120 volt fixtures.

Jim,

Good explanation.  I was lurking and wondering also how 110 volt lamps could
possibly be used in a 12vdc system.

My '66 Safari has the 12vdc fixtures and 12vdc incandescent bulbs but I am
considering replacing them with fluorescents when I begin using it.
