I'm not sure about 1953, but later axles can be
replaced with off the shelf "Dexter" axles - in fact,
I'm planning that work on my 1960.  I agree with the
replacement angle - they are CHEEP, probably cheaper
to replace the whole thing than to restore the old
one...
