As a changer of 3,808,493 3/4 ton Army tires, they are no more dangerous
than any other tire...*IF* when you air them up you simply put the tire
ring side down and air it from the rear. But, if I had some on any
vehicle, I'd change them out to newer rims. The military rigs were
infamous for metal fatigue. The rings flex and over a period of time
will come off under load.

And, 3am on the Road between Pleiku and Camp Hollaway was a REAL bad
time to have problem with the tires.

There is only one solution to split rims: new rims. Split rims have
developed a reputation of being unsafe, especially for the person
installing tires. When not perfectly assembled, split rims have been
known to decapitate the person holding the tire chuck on the valve stem
while seating the tire bead. OSHA rules now require a sturdy cage around
the wheel and tire and remote control on the air. Few tire shops have
these tools and fewer are the right size for a Bambi rim, being more
suited to large truck tires. Fewer tire shops understand the variety of
split rims and how to assemble them properly. One series, on early 60s
vintage 3/4 ton Ford trucks developed a tendency to come apart while on
the road.

I've never desired white wall tires, so I don't know about them. Perhaps
a place that deals in tires for vintage automobiles has white sidewall
tire paint.
