i've just taken delivery on a set of coker 4ply nylons for my '48
Trailwind... 4" WIDE whitewalls.
they're rated at 1,970lbs @ 32psi... the stiff sidewalls are more than
adequate for trailering. They also make steel-belted radials rated at about
the same load, with a 2-7/8" whitewall... as long as one monitors the
pressure, i don't anticipate any problems with this tire. I'm seriously
considering installing a SmarTire monitor in each wheel, just to be on the
safer side...

There are a couple of different types of 'spit-rim' wheels - the so-called
'combat rims' of the WWII vintage, where the wheel is actually in two parts,
bolted together, for fast tire-changes under combat conditions... these are
highly-prized by vintage jeep folks. They present no special danger when the
tires are sufficiently deflated prior to removal... but this is not what the
old Airstream wheels were...

The 'split-rim' wheels on the older airstreams use a large 'split RING' to
retain the tire, and present a very real and very serious danger to
installers/removers. They are ordinarily handled inside a cage which
prevents accidental death/decapitation/dismemberment to the careless handler
or innocent onlooker.

Few (if any) tire shops will handle these wheels anymore. Newer aluminum or
steel wheels of the proper size and bolt pattern are available, i'm not sure
what they are/were... i seem to recall that some Chevy wheels from light
trucks were a good match - perhaps some other listees know precisely.
