Nick,

You ever install any other OS (linux?) on an SGI?
Just curious... I've got some Indigo2s hanging around.
Should have junked them by now, but I'm too lazy....

cheers,
Ernie

My NeXTStation is easier to move... 15lbs vs 65-70lbs for my Octane2.
Even with the proprietary monitor the NeXTStation weighs less :) But
IRIX is a nice UNIX. But NeXTStep was my first real UNIX, and I fell in
love with it - which is why I love OS X now. NeXTStep v10 (or something
like that... OpenStep v10 more like). The only thing with NeXTStep is
that it is similar to OS X and BSD (Darwin) so there are not too many
suprises for most OS X Unix heads. But we could look and see how much
artwork from OS X was derived from NeXTStep :)

Anyway, if we do it at UVM and they have cooler hardware than an old
NexT Slab or Octane2, I'm fine with not carrying that stuff over :)

Which reminds me: For Sale - SGI Octane2, V6 graphics, 512MiB RAM, 18GiB
root disk, 50GiB option disk, Octane Compression option (super rare)!
Octane2 alone is $250. Compression Option is $300. Both together for
$500. Octane2 Comes with complete set of IRIX v6 OS discs (quite
unusual), and a CD-ROM drive to boot it (not something built in to most
SGIs). Compression Option comes with software disc (unusual). Also
included with Octane2 - original ESI graphics board. Will deliver for
free within 1 hour of Montpelier... Or come pickup. (Original price ~$25,000. My, how times change.)

Any offers? ... Didn't think so :P

The NeXTStation is NOT for sale - you'll have to pry it from my cold
dead fingers!!

-Nick

A Unix / Linux shootout would be fun. Especially if people brought in cool hardware. I've got a POWER3 I could bring in with AIX, and if I could find some Tru64 disks I could bring in one of my Alphas. Nick F might be able to provide some IRIX goodness as well.

If we do it at UVM, we can check out a bunch of nifty hardware.

mga.
