I use qemu mostly because it's simple and it's what I've used for a long time. I don't use it to run applications for my use, though. I mostly use it to test disk images. qemu emulates the full machine, including a BIOS, so I can test that the boot sector, the boot loader, and the OS are all configured correctly.
