any other recomendations on what to look into?
my end goal is to try to get a flash drive that allows me to boot from any
OS (windows, mac, linux,) and also as a persistant live USB (requires
reboot) and have the same environment.

Why not just use VirtualBox instead, foregoing the unnecessary overhead

emulating the hardware? Virtualization is /much/ more efficient and more
appropriate if you aren't running on a different architecture (ie.

I use qemu mostly because it's simple and it's what I've used for a long
time.
I don't use it to run applications for my use, though. I mostly use it to
test
disk images. qemu emulates the full machine, including a BIOS, so I can
test
that the boot sector, the boot loader, and the OS are all configured
correctly.
Can VirtualBox boot real disk images, or does it use some special image
format?
Thanks,
Forest
