The hexgrid in VASSAL is purely to regulate movement. Note that I enable the hexgrid, but I check to not show it - instead I show the grid that I drew. By enabling the hexgrid in VASSAL, the counters will 'snap' to location within the hex, the LOS tool will function (if needed), and reporting will work where it will report that such and such piece moved from $oldlocation to $newlocation.
