Actually the VirtualBox snapshot usage are quite vary. For me, I usually use 
VirtualBox snapshots as an intermediary steps/milestones, since my VMs are 
mostly for customer demos, deployment simulation, etc. Before changing any 
configuration, I snapshot it first so whenever the new configuration failed I 
just revert to a specific snapshot.

For your kind of purpose, I personally prefer to use ZFS features (snapshots & 
clones). Let's say I have a base VM fully configured system, I could then 
create two clones from it using ZFS. One for development environment, one for 
testing environment, both running at the same time. Just an example.

Looking at Chris' requirement, I assume that he was trying to merge the VDI 
snapshots into the VDI disk, please CMIIW.
