I would like to create a virtual hard drive that can be swapped
between multiple VMs of compatible architecture (e.g., Linux: ext4
fs).

I would keep a partition like /usr/local on it so I could upgrade a VM
without the hassle of copying data out of the VM being replaced.

Any ideas for a "best practice" to accomplish that?

Best regards,

-Tom
