I don't have this particular problem but a couple years ago I had a hardware problem (CPU issues when set to rated speed) on a dual core AMD. Virtualbox exercised the CPU more thoroughly or potentially used certain capabilities not otherwise used but when I would run virtualbox guests, it would crash periodically (no dump files, shutdown or anything, just a spontaneous reboot). This was true when running any OS as host. The fix was slowing down the CPU by 10% below rated percent. I never had the problem again with that system. My next system (everything new) was a quad core AMD and I had the same problem when I turned on the power saving mode for the cpu (cool and quiet? I don't remember anymore). I turned this functionality off and have not had a problem with this since either. This might be a red-herring but it could be the issue for you as well. Does your system crash when you DON'T run virtualbox guests. Does your system crash when you reduce the cpu speed, etc.
