Hello Phil, This is probably going to be quite a long debugging process, as I expect that there is something particular about your virtual machine which is causing problems. Could you try running the following command as root on the guest:
sh -x /sbin/rcvboxadd-x11 setup and capturing the standard output and error in a log file? That is the command which should be setting up the graphics parts and putting the X.Org driver in place. (Feel free to experiment a bit to find out more, that could speed things up too.)
