Here are the two I tried in 10.7.5, both of which produced the "instant stop" behavior: 4.3.40 and 4.0.36 If it's the problem with the hardware, specifically the 32-bit EFI, then the operating system, while relevant, won't be the ultimate issue for this particular system.
