Hello Richard, Just to be sure: I take it that you created tap1 using the tunctl utility. Did you make it accessible to your user using that utility? And did you specify the name of the device in the VM configuration?
Other than that, you might want to go through the steps in the user manual in the host interface networking section (I take it that you are using the VirtualBox packages from virtualbox.org which include the manual).
