Well, I could I suppose once I have the partition installation in a
virtual disk.  Ultimately, I can't trash that installation though, as
it's the (Sun Microsystems, funny enough) "corporate standard"
installation.

You mean the XP that's installed on the raw partition?  I have been
meaning also to boot that up on the native hardware and see what the
task manager (and perfmon -- which is the tool I was trying to remember
yesterday) say the same things about performance.
