A midline is a peripheral IV, and not a line to be placed just because you
want to use it for blood draws. It is not a reliable source for those. If
you can get blood back, I'd use it for that......but don't count on it.

We tell our floors that if they don't get blood return it does not mean
it is not patent. I have not ever not gotten blood return rite after
insertion or even within a day. It happens a lot at our facility that
they may not get a return after a couple days, without any other signs
of infiltration, phlebitis etc. we tell them to leave it in. What does
everyone else do? Are we teaching them wrong?

Well, we attempt to draw blood from our midlines, but it's not a
reliable
line to use for that. I believe that the tip meanders over to the
vessel
wall and gives it a 'hickey' when you pull back aggressively.
Repositioning
the arm sometimes helps.......

I have a good one.....I must have missed this one, but does anyone out
there know that you CAN'T get a blood return from a midline??? I am not
talking about whether it is right or wrong to DRAW blood from a Midline,
I am talking about checking for placement with a blood return???? I
have always been able to get a blood return when I place mine, but was
told yesterday that "you don't get blood return from a midline"??? This
occurred a few hours after the line was placed.
????????????????????
