We do about 25 midlines a month here and it frequently happens
that you can't get a blood return on them. We only use the midline for patients
getting IV fluids, blood, DHE therapy, and for those that "just need access" so
they are not in place too long, on average 3-10 days. We haven't seen any issues
from not being able to draw back blood, the line still flushes easily. These
patients aren't getting vesicants. If a patient needs frequent lab draws, we
place a PICC.

Subject: Blood return
I have a good one…..I must have missed this one, but does anyone out there know that you CAN'T get a blood return from a midline??? I am not talking about whether it is right or wrong to DRAW blood from a Midline, I am talking about checking for placement with a blood return???? I have always been able to get a blood return when I place mine, but was told yesterday that "you don't get blood return from a midline"??? This occurred a few hours after the line was placed.
????????????????????
