It wasn't here, it was up on the Minnesota side of the Boundary Waters 30
years ago. I was flinging a beetle spin in top of lily pads & dropping it
into open water trying to catch dinner on a camping trip. I thought I had a
northern until I got it close to the canoe. It was a little bigger than a
dinner plate, 3 lbs 14 ozs according to the spring scale. Biggest I've
caught on a fly rod was a pound 12 ozs, but still a lot of fun on a 5 wt.

I caught a 3+ lb gill on light tackle once, & pound for pound I'd have to
say they are @ least one of the strongest. Plus their propensity to run in
circles when hooked makes things a bit interesting.

"In clear water, you can sometimes watch bluegills rise to the fly, then
stop and observe it for several seconds before sipping it in. Consequently,
your retrieves should be extra slow with long pauses. Some anglers claim
bluegills are the strongest fish in freshwater."
