I think that your "obvious problem with tube flies" is more perceived than
real and not a real problem.  I my case I am more likely to damage my tube
fly than lose it in a snag.

Fooling big fish has never been a problem for me!  My leading cause of
breakoffs is probably an over-enthusiastic hook set when a lunker blasts the
fly.  In second place is putting a fly into a tree on my backcast *grin*.

Just wanted to see if there was a simple solution to what seemed to me to be
an obvious problem with tube flies.  No reason to lose a fly unnecessarily
if it can be avoided.
