Neville:

I prefer to fish for bass here in Arizona. Both the largemouth, that we have
down in Phoenix and the smallmouth up north on the Indian Reservation, because
they fight so much harder.
I only use FF rods and reels to fish for bass. If you haven’t used FF gear for
them , you are missing out on a bunch of fun.
I have sinking line as well as different sink rates of sink tips. That is where
you’ll catch the most bass.

I still have all my old conventional gear but have not used it in years. Even
when I take my grandkids fishing I bring my fly gear.
I plan on teaching them this year. I do have some small rods and reels.

I promised myself that when I got into fly fishing, that I would not start
buying too much FF gear.....so much for that idea.
I now have 10 fly rods.

Thank You,
Alan Di Somma

"I am driven to go fishing. If unable to fly fish I will pursue some other
form, but I must fish."

I spent my youth in England and fished for as many species of fish that I
could. This included fishing for coarse fish such as roach, beam, tench, carp
pike etc. I also successfully fly fished for trout with a japanese made bamboo
fly rod. I still have much of the coarse fishing tackle which I brought to
Canada but have not used it for years.

A few years ago, having never caught (or seen) a largemouth bass, I learned of
a nearby lake that had a small stock of largemouth and so I set out to catch
one. Bass only exist in a few select lakes in southern British Columbia. I
enjoy using good quality tackle and like to hone my skills with either a
baitcast (preferred) or spinning rod by casting a lure "just to the left of
that lily pad over there."
Very occasionally, I will get out my old English match (competition) rod,
centrepin reel and float fish for black crappie and sunfish which again are not
well distributed here. One of my goals is to catch a sturgeon. I have obtained
a large LHW mutiplier (called conventional in USA) but still need a suitable
rod and line.

I have not fished for bass for the past 21/2 years but plan to get in a least
one trip this year - and yes, I have many bass and other rods (most purchased
secondhand) and a small collection of baitcast reels, both modern and old. I
used to collect Pflueger reels and have a LHW Summit and a couple of RHW Akrons.

Oh, by the way, I did catch a few largemouths up to just over 4 pounds.
