Yes, you are correct . Our long winters and the lack of really hot summers 
slows their growth. I actually keep a reel loaded with a bass taper floating 
fly line which used to I take out with me from time to time. Problem was I had 
a hard time catching anything on lures let alone a fly.  It turned out that the 
lake where I had previously caught bass had been electro fished by the Fish & 
Wildlife Branch and all bass so caught removed and killed, however I was not 
aware of this and couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong. Our Fish & 
Wildlife do not support bass and remove them when they can except for a few 
locations.  They claim that they are illegally stocked, but the place that I go 
to for bass has contained largemouth bass for about 60 years, according to a 
good source of information.
