Neville: Yes only 10....and that is too much. I work for Bass Pro Shops and see many different anglers come in the store. Some of them must have a different rod and reel for this type of fish or that type of water etc.etc.etc. I will be happy to keep them supplied with ALL the equipment that they want.
I am primarily a bass fisherman although I have been salt water fishing with a fly rod as well as casting in the surf in Mexico, all with fly fishing gear. The bass you talk about, don’t get as big as the ones here but they do get as old. They’re growing season is cut short by the cold weather. We actually have largemouth bass in the northern parts of the state and they don’t grow as big as the ones here in the low land... When I lived in New Jersey, we had largemouth bass but the winter were long and the summers not too long, so they didn’t get as big as in warmer climates. Bass are tough and feisty, that is why I like to fish for them. Alan: I suspect that is not the same in a relatively cool British Columbia as it is in a warm/hot Arizona. Bass are a warm water fish and there is no warm water in BC. I have never fished for bass outside BC. Our waters are cold which makes the bass less active. I have used small fly poppers, but all that I have caught were a few crappie. I fly fish more than 98% of the time. You are missing the point that I like to use the tackle associated with bass and other fishing. There is a skill attached to using, for example, a direct drive handles turning baitcast reel such as a Pfleuger Akron. I used to be able to cast well directly from a centrepin reel and I derive pleasure from doing that. In fact, I still have a Hardy super silex. It is just using the tackle that I enjoy. Fish are a bonus although highly desirable. Only 10 fly rods? Both the largemouth, that we have down in Phoenix and the smallmouth up north on the Indian Reservation, because they fight so much harder. I only use FF rods and reels to fish for bass. If you haven’t used FF gear for them , you are missing out on a bunch of fun. I have sinking line as well as different sink rates of sink tips. That is where you’ll catch the most bass. I still have all my old conventional gear but have not used it in years. Even when I take my grandkids fishing I bring my fly gear. I plan on teaching them this year. I do have some small rods and reels. I promised myself that when I got into fly fishing, that I would not start buying too much FF gear.....so much for that idea. I now have 10 fly rods.
