True, but I started tying in 1974 having tied a few in my youth using whatever
I could get my hands on such as feathers from a pillow & aluminum cooking foil
for the tinsel. After 40 years of tying, and I think that I can honestly say I
have tied flies during each of those years and have built up quite a collection
of materials from a wide variety of sources. I have spent several hours this
past few days, sorting out my fly boxes and flies into some sort of order. This
summer, when I went lake fishing, i took one large Feather-craft slit foam boat
size fly box which I picked up at the 2011 Sowbug, with the thought that it
would be better to have one really big fly box rather than multiple small fly
boxes. In reality, I found this box rather difficult, as the foam is black and
the slits not clearly marked and I found it a bit fiddly to replace flies once
removed. There are other types on the market, with different features which
may be better and which I intend to try.
These would be for fishing from a boat only.

At present, I have a large pile of dry flies heaped on the table and I plan to
steam them, in order to return the squashed ones to the original shape. Then
sorted by size, type, etc. I am going back to the compartment type boxes for my
dry flies, as they seem to be susceptible to being crushed in some of the small
C & F type boxes.

Any fly that need minor repair goes in to one box while those with rusty hooks
or just poorly tied and not likely to be used are thrown out.

My basic sorting is:

1 by specie;
2 by intended style e.g. nymph, dry etc.;
3 by intended type e.g. midge, tube, waddington, intruder (most of these need a
special box)
4 by intended use e.g lake, river;
5 by fresh or saltwater.
