While I never saw the fish, it acted like catfish. I used to have a two piece 5
wt that I kept rigged for when I only had time to go to the pond, had a cat in
almost the same exact place crack the rod right @ the ferrule while I was
fighting it. That was a smaller fish:)

I had the same thing happen at a slew on Crooked Creek but I got the see the
Carp. I thought I was snagged but the line slowly started coming up. The Carp
was right up on top, it looked like a submarine coming up. It just stayed there
for a few seconds and rolled breaking off my last Chili Pepper. I tried to have
it take another fly with no luck.

what I thought was a snag, until it started moving. Moved about ten feet
along the shore, realized it was hooked & even though I was letting line out
through my fingers, the 3x tippet snapped

about 6 inches from the leader.

 Sounds like a big old
 catfish.

 Get some heavy
tippet on and go back and catch that dood so we know what

 it was. <G>
