No rain taken, Paul.  You're exactly right.  You can't make a tapered leader the way I'm doing it.  I just tie on a 12" to 24" piece of 5,6, or 7X mono tippet at the end.  The proof in the pudding will come when I fish these things in NM in March.  As limp as they are, I don't think I'll see much difference in the way the fish react to them.  The Browns maybe, but not the Cutts and Bows.

Thanks for your input and clarification

Jimmy

P.S. I made a couple from .002 Nylon sewing thread, but it had "memory" and still wanted to coil./

With no intention to rain on Jimmy's parade, at least as I understand
the post, his mix-master method yields a uniform-thickness furled
leader. Other, more complicated, methods yield a tapered furled leader.
Am I wrong? One can do the same thing with braided nylon leaders, i.e.,
make a uniform leader from braided nylon backing, but the tapered
variety is, at least to my knowledge, beyond the capability of the home
workshop. Is tapered better than uniform? Theoretically yes,
practically? Don't know because I haven't tried the latter. Cheers,

Cheers,
