Henk, Hans had it right.  I've made several braided furled leaders out of some
of my rod winding thread using one leg of my wife's Mix Master.   Of course,
these are a uniform thickness the entire length.  I was just having a
difficult time picturing how you could start out with say 18 strands and taper
down to ultimately 2 to 4 strands without having the preceding strands
protrude at the step-down.  After viewing several sites I have a better grasp
of it. Still haven't attempted to do a tapered furled leader yet. But will
soon.
