I think it should definately come down to the gape size. Shank size doesn't 
matter nearly as much. For fly tying purposes, a larger hook shank allows 
more room to tie. However, for actual fishing purposes, which is actually why 
we tie (maybe not true for all), it is the gape size that alters hook ups. 
Just what I think.
