As far as I know this was the huge dispute when the English
invented 'nymphing'. First attempt was to cast only to fish which has been seen.
Therefore it was allowed as substitute for dry flies.
The discussion was about fishing the fish or fishing the
water, what we nowadays do mostly. For these purists trolling is not flyfishing
as it is 'fishing the water'.
That was the alternative to C&R: Catch only fish you want
to keep! 6 hours steamside, 8 casts and 3 catch. Probaly relaxing
too.

I realize that this is just a " point-to-ponder." However, flyfishing is
casting a artifical fly/bug/lure to fish that you know are
there. I'm not sure that this covers nymphing.
