Wouldn't a fast tip rod work better for a quick head shake?
My experience is if the fly/rod tip jerks that the fish is mine to lose. Once the jerk is felt I either hook the fish, jerk the fly out of his mouth or break off the fly (usually at a knot which is my error). All this normally depends on how high strung I am and whether I just arrived at the stream.
