I think the Avid casts "better" than the Legend Ultra. This may be due however to my casting "style" (or lack thereof). I'm wondering if the Legend Ultra would ultimately be a better choice as my casting skills improve. I also like the looks of the Legend Ultra FAR better than the Avid, but that is really secondary.

What a nice present this will be for you! Yes, the cosmetics of the Legend Ultra series are very nice, but if the Avid feels better to you, hey... I'd also recommend that you look at Loomis's Adventure series. Supposedly their low end, or close to it, but cosmetically much nicer than some of their higher end rods! You'll find these to be just a bit faster taper than the St. Croix, but not as fast as say the Loomis GLX, or GL-3's. Also, have you had the chance to play with a St. Croix Imperial?
