Here's a recommendation for a book that is wonderfully written and is also a moving expression of what's so valuable in wild places. It's Harry Middleton's "The Earth Is Enough", describing his youth in the Ozarks with a grandfather and grand-uncle who open that "back-door" for him. It is excellent.
