Snap, I do exactly the same as John, except I use nail varnish/head cement
as a thin coating before winding flat tinsel in two layers. Then I
counterwind, as John, with wire.
I usually lose the fly before it is destroyed by trout teeth.
All the best
Graeme.

Deb-

Don't know how other probably better tyers do it, but
I use a toothpick to apply a thin coat of crazy-glue
or head cement to the shank of the hook and wrap the
tinsel before it dries. If you use crazy-glue, try to
find a brand with a slightly slower dry time. Of
course, you want to do a nice, neat job of laying the
tinsel down on the first try, 'cause once it's down
it's there for life. You can give it a light coat of
head cement once it's wrapped, whether you use a base
layer under it or not.

What I usually do is just counter wrap it with light
wire in a matching or contrasting color. Holds it in
place and gives a nice effect, at least I think so.

Maybe some of the other guys have some better tricks.
