I hate to say, but I used Veniard's Head lacquer. And I just laid it right over the epoxy. Its on a 7 weight rod, and I don't notice any difference in its action. These were guides I re-wrapped, and I was able to set the guides on the spine of the top section, so I benefitted there. But a rod's wrappings can be coated with spar varnish, or any varnish for rod wrappings. Which takes me back to the old days, before epoxy coatings. But for finishing a rod, epoxy is so superior for strength, that I would not use lacquer alone. I just used it in this case to fix a botched cure, and I notice no problems. Rob
