Dean,

Thanks.  I'll give the clorox treatment a try.  I used the old eraser trick, and no dice.  How long should the herls be left in the clorox solution?  Also, do you soak them in full strength bleach, or a diluted solution?

   MARK,

I'm not extremely versed at this Peacock thing, but i do pay attention to my Peacock herls... My view is that some of the Peacock herls are not "two-toned" as you are looking for.. they are the basic brown with slight variations in color from one side of the herl to the other. I think that on these herls the only way to get the "two Toned" feature to come out is bleaching the herls..."Burn off the fuzz" as it where. Of course you KNow you have to be very careful doing this so you will not fry the herls. But on those herls that do not show the "Two toned" feature with just using your Fingernails/eraser/dull razor blade...this is the only oppition available to you.The herls are still useful in tying. I have had these over the years & I will use them for Quill Gordons, but you have to do a slightly different way of tying them to get they "Two Toned" body you seek.

Use tan thread to tye the fly, after you've tyed in the "brown" stripped herl & bring the thread forward, you will wrap thew Herl forward, leaving a space between the wraps to allow the Tan thread to show thru...once you tye off the Herl, coat the herl & exposed thread with Fleximent & that should seal it just right for you.....

Hope this helps you. I'm in agreement with you...too much Plucking around the ol' Vfb these past two days....whatever.

All,

I finally got around to start tying my Quill Gordons for the bench swap
last night, and as I was stripping peacock herl for the bodies, I noticed
that I wasn't seeing the light stripe that I was used to seeing on the
quill. I stripped a bunch of different quills from the eye and from up and
down the stem. They all seem to have a uniform brown shade the entire
length. Anybody ever run into this before? Is this a dyed feather, or is
it just the way peacock is now?
