Dean,

Thanks much for the how-to.  I'd heard about bleaching the eyes before, but never had to do it.  Back in days of yore, Art Flick told me that was how he did it, but he never told me how he did it.

   MARK,

To do this "Bleaching Thing" right you'll need 2 seperate bowls. one has the straight bleach in it. the other will have water with disolved baking soda in it. You'll be doing the Bleaching right next to a sink.

First off, get the Peacock eyes you want to bleach wet under the running water of the faucet. Secondly remove the dripping water by pulling the eye gently thru your fingers... Leave the faucet running as it will be used again shortly.

You are now going to quickly submerge the eye into the bleach, swish it around so as to get the bleach everywhere at the same time.  watch the yes as it will bubble abit as the Bleach desolves the "fuzz"..DO NOT LEAVE THE EYE IN THE BLEACH TOO LONG. as soon as the "Fuzz" bubbles, take the eye out & place it directly under the running water, this will remove most of the bleach & slow down the Desolving...check out the Herls to see if all the fuzz(or at least 90% of it) is gone, if you feel the need to place the eye back into the bleach...do it very fast!!! Again, swish the eye around quickly & remove fast, back under the running water to rinse off the bleach.

Once you've decided you've bleached the eye enough, place it in the bowl with the Desolved Baking Soda...this will nuteralize the Bleach, stopping it from burning up the entire Eye..let the Eye set in the bowl for awhile, swish it around to get everywhere(I usually let the all the bleached eyes set in the Baking soda bowl until I'm done bleaching the all the eyes I want do at that time).. rinse off in the running water after they've sat in the Baking soda bowl for a good amount of time...

Mark, you are going to accidently burn a Peacock eye beyond possible use, it just happens that way as you learn the bleaching technique, my advice would be get the crappiest Peacock you have to be the first one you do the bleaching method with.

Watch the bleaching very carefully so you develop the experiance to realize when that eye is bleached enough...

Oh yeah, store the bleached Eyes in a ziplock bag, and when you want to tye with them, place the eyes in a bowl of water for about a half hour before your going to tye with them. this will soften them up so they will be alot more "user friendly"...

Any additional question Mark??? Email me directly. have fun..

Dean,

Thanks.  I'll give the clorox treatment a try.  I used the old eraser trick, and no dice.  How long should the herls be left in the clorox solution?  Also, do you soak them in full strength bleach, or a diluted solution?
