Hans-

After reading my last post, I realized I had ignored (or avoided) the question about wings on smaller flies. If I'm tying for the fish, I'll usually leave them off. However, there are times when I will make myself tie them if that's what the traditional pattern calls for. This occasionally leads to some frustration or annoyance, but I almost always learn something. Usually what I learn is to never bother tying that blankety-blank-blank pattern again.

The issue of winging or not winging is like almost all fly fishing questions I've run across in the brief span of time since I got into this sport. Nearly every question will have two (sometimes more) almost diametrically opposed camps, eg, "Fish don't care, fish DO care!". Both of them will be backed by personal experience and numerous citations from well known figures in the field. Usually I do it one way one day and the other way the next, just to be contrary.
