I take your point on this, but flies have always been called flies even if they don't imitate anything in particular. Look at salmon and steelhead flies, they look like nothing in nature, but they still catch fish and if you showed it someone, even someone who doesn't flyfish, they would know it was a fly.

Actually, just wanted to stir up a little action. Don't know if you recall the debate about putting hardware on flies or not, but that was sure fun. General consensus seemed to be that while all flies are lures, not all lures are flies, but what actually makes a fly a fly generated considerable heat as well as some light. <G>

I believe a "fly" is a replica of a mayfly, caddis, stonefly.  Anything else is a lure.  Whether a woolybugger, muddler or San Juan Worm, they ain't flys.  Would I fish some of the lures?  Sure.  Go to the PA regs to see what's legal.  Most would agree with me.  It's not what lures the fish but what allows the fish to be released or kept IMHO.  Oh, and no scent.  Yes Byard, you can keep your Copper Johns (but they ain't flys).  Okay!  Larva, but what species?
