Del, The most vulnerable stage in any mayfly nymph's life must be just prior and during its transition into a dun, when they are out in the water column and wide open to predation. Regardless of the natural nymph's color, leading up to emergence its wingpads will darken and swell up some. I use this phenomenon in my tying, as I think it is likely one of the 'positive' triggers I want to incorporate into my patterns. My wing case material of choice are a couple strands of peacock herl. This material, which is surprisingly durable when used for this purpose, has the coloration and the mobility/volume to imitate very nicely what I am after. I suggest you give it a try. Cheers, Hans
