We had a gentleman in our Indpls. flyfishing club (and he was one of the few "gentlemen" in the club) by the name of Ed Mueller. He had been a guide in the Yellowstone area back in the fifties and sixties. I asked him one day what his favorite fly was. He said, "Oh it doesn't matter as long as it has peacock in it, either as a body, tail or wing." Ed felt that peacock was the most lifelike feather available for tying.
